About J. Alan Graham, Ph.D.
During my undergraduate work, I was a “Psychiatric Assistant” on the detox unit of an Alcoholism & Drug Addiction Treatment Center. I continued working in addiction treatment including working with impaired professionals throughout graduate school. I found it rewarding to watch people dramatically change their lives with abstinence, psychotherapy, and work in a 12-step program. Hence, my pre-doctoral exams and my doctoral dissertation focused on the understanding and treatment of addictive disorders.
I received my doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from Georgia State University in 1994. At that time, there were subdivisions within the graduate program and I was in the one entitled, “Psychotherapy.” During graduate school, I was awarded the John Warkenton Scholarship for “Outstanding Potential in Psychotherapy.”
Since completing my degree, I have maintained a private practice in Atlanta working with individuals, couples, families and groups. While in private practice, I served as Clinical Director for a community mental health agency serving NW Georgia. Following this, I was a clinical faculty at Georgia State University Counseling Center, supervising interns and post-doctoral fellows.
At the present time, I am in full-time private practice and work primarily with couples. I am ICEEFT Certified as an Emotionally Focused Therapist and Supervisor. In addition to my work with couples and individuals, I supervise other EFT-trained couple therapists.
